Rakesh Bhukal is a distinguished regional expert in soilless-growing & climate-resilient technology, and the Founder and Managing Director of Aquatik Solutions. For over a decade, he has been at the forefront of advancing and revolutionizing food security initiatives across the Caribbean by bridging the gap between rigorous academic research and highly profitable, climate-resilient farming techniques.
Rakesh is pursuing a PhD in Crop Science / Tropical Earth & Environmental Science from The University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine, where his ground-breaking doctoral research centres on developing Aquaponics (Hydroponics + Aquaculture) and Nature-Based Circular Bioeconomy Models using native Black Soldier Flies. His deep academic foundation is supported by an MSc in Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development from UWI, a BSc (Hons) in Environmental and Natural Resource Management, a Certificate in Tropical Agriculture and a specialized Aquaculture & Fish Health Graduate Courses from the University of Florida.
In 2014, driven by the critical vulnerabilities that climate change, rising input costs, and shifting weather patterns pose to traditional Caribbean farming, Rakesh founded Aquatik Solutions. Under his leadership, the firm has become a premier regional consultancy organisation, optimizing high-tech, integrated production systems—including Hydroponics, Aquaculture, and Aquaponics—specifically engineered to function efficiently and profitably within tropical climates. His pioneering work in closed-loop agriculture earned him the prestigious "Best Innovative Environmental Technology" title at the Green Leaf Awards by the Environmental Management Authority (EMA).
Beyond his enterprise, Rakesh is a trusted institutional leader and an international subject matter expert. He serves as a Regional Consultant for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, where he spearheaded the first Black Soldier Fly pilot facility at UWI St. Augustine and UWI Cave Hill in Barbados. He has also served as a Hydroponics Expert for USAID initiatives in Dominica and currently chairs the Bioeconomy Stakeholder Advisory Committee at COSTAATT, where he also lectures.
Deeply committed to building regional capacity, Rakesh has designed and delivered world-class technical training across the Caribbean. From executing foundational youth-grower programs with international energy firms to lecturing advanced university-level courses at the UWI Faculty of Food and Agriculture, he continues to empower the next generation of Caribbean agricultural leaders to build a sustainable, food-secure tomorrow.
