Rakesh Bhukal is an agricultural innovator, researcher, and entrepreneur driving sustainable, climate-resilient food systems across the Caribbean. As founder and Managing Director of Aquatik Solutions, he has spent over a decade advancing Aquaculture, Hydroponics, Aquaponics, and Insect Farming (Black Soldier Fly Technology), transforming food production through circular bioeconomy principles and cutting-edge innovation.

A recognized regional leader in Soilless Agriculture, Rakesh has designed and delivered numerous capacity-building initiatives & projects across Trinidad & Tobago, Grenada, Barbados, Dominica, Guyana, and beyond. His work includes flagship projects such as Grenada’s first school-based Aquaponics system under the GEF-funded Olive Branch Project, consultancy for USAID’s Caribbean Agricultural Productivity Improvement Activity (CAPA) Programme in Dominica that supports agricultural advancement across the Eastern Caribbean, and national initiatives like GrowSmart - A collaborative project between The British High Commission in Port of Spain and the Women-Owned Media and Education Network (W.O.M.E.N), ADOPT (Agriculture Demonstration of Practices & Technology) - A collaborative project with REPSOL and UWI's Faculty of Food and Agriculture, and the Rotary Club Hydroponics Project, empowering women, youth, and schools to adopt Sustainable Food Systems.

Academically, he holds a Certificate in Tropical Agriculture (CTA), BSc in Environmental & Natural Resource Management with Minors in Marine Biology and Zoology (Hons), an MSc in Biodiversity Conservation & Sustainable Development in the Caribbean, and multiple professional certifications, including Hydroponics and Aquaculture specialization from the University of Florida. Currently completing his PhD at UWI, his research explores Aquaponics, Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Farming and Circular Bioeconomy models for Organic Waste Management and Sustainable Food Production.

As an Adjunct Faculty at COSTAATT and long-standing instructor and part-lecturer at The University of the West Indies, Rakesh contributes to regional education in Aquaculture, Hydroponics, Aquaponics, Climate-Smart Agriculture, and Sustainable Food Production. His academic and research portfolio includes 10+ peer-reviewed publications in journals such as Journal of Hymenoptera Research, Caribbean Journal of Science, and Living World. In addition to that his work has also been published in national Newspaper features in both Trinidad and Barbados.

Internationally recognized as a Caribbean pioneer in Aquaponics and Black Soldier Fly technology, Rakesh serves as consultant to the FAO Insect Farming Pilot Project, conducting regional training and presenting at major conferences on climate resilience and circular economy such as the Caribbean Task Force on Food Safety in Suriname and the Resilient Islands: Zero Waste and Circular Caribbean Webinar Series organized by the United Nations Environment Programme. Additionally, he was a panellist/ presenter in the Caribbean Artificial Intelligence Forum on "AI for Sustainable Development in SIDS" organized by UNESCO in 2021. His leadership continues to shape policies, partnerships, and innovations that advance food sovereignty for Small Island Developing States.
